With only 1g of net carbs per serving, they're made from 100% organic, keto-friendly ingredients such as almond flour, unsweetened dark chocolate chips, and pecans. What is the difference between net carbs and total carbs?
Carbohydrates are a key macronutrient found in many foods and drinks. When tracking your carbohydrate intake, especially on a ketogenic diet, understanding the difference between total carbs and net carbs is crucial for managing your dietary goals effectively.
Total Carbs refer to the sum of all types of carbohydrates in food, including sugars, complex carbohydrates (starches), and fiber. This number represents the total amount of carbohydrates you consume from a food item.
Net Carbs, on the other hand, are calculated by subtracting fiber and certain sugar alcohols from the total carbohydrates. The idea behind net carbs is that not all carbs affect the body in the same way. For example, fiber is a carbohydrate that the body cannot digest, so it doesn't raise blood sugar levels. Similarly, some sugar alcohols have minimal impact on blood sugar.
How do I calculate net carbs?
Net Carbs=Total Carbohydrates−Fiber−Sugar Alcohols
- Look at the Nutrition Label: Start by checking the nutrition facts on the food packaging. You'll need the total carbohydrates, fiber, and, if included, sugar alcohol content.
- Subtract Fiber: Since fiber is a carbohydrate that your body cannot digest, it doesn't raise your blood sugar levels. Subtract the grams of fiber from the total carbohydrates to start calculating net carbs.
- Subtract Sugar Alcohols (if applicable): If the product contains sugar alcohols (such as xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, etc.), you can also subtract these from the total carbs. Note that some people only subtract half the amount of sugar alcohols due to their partial impact on blood sugar levels, depending on the specific type of sugar alcohol and personal sensitivity.
Here's an example calculation:
- Suppose a food item has 20 grams of total carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of erythritol (a sugar alcohol).
Net Carbs=20g (Total Carbohydrates)−5g (Fiber)−4g (Sugar Alcohols)=11g Net Carbs=20g(Total Carbohydrates)−5g(Fiber)−4g(Sugar Alcohols)=11g
